Nineteen Steps, a WWII novel based on Brown’s own grandmother’s memories, is a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller that William Morrow released in September 2023. Composed by Brown and Kathleen McGurl, the narrative centers on eighteen-year-old Nellie Morris, who lives in the Bethnal Green district of East London. As she forges a new relationship with American airman Ray, Nellie traverses the difficulties of wartime living throughout the book, such as the possibility of bombs, rationing, and the psychological anguish of being away from loved ones. The Bethnal Green Tube disaster, one of the worst civilian tragedies in the UK during the war, is at the center of the historical narrative of the book.
